La sfarsitul celui de-al doilea Razboi Mondial, fratii Reimar si Horten au fost 2 dintre cel mai cunoscuti designeri de avioane din Germania. Ei au adus expertiza in accest domeniu creand o divizie speciala care, la fel ca divizia Sonderkommando 9, se ocpua cu dezvoltarea avioanelor fara coada.
Dezvoltarea avionului Horton Ho IX, echipat cu motoare cu reactie BMW 003A-1, a inceput in anul 1942. Primele prototipuri au fost construite tip "glider" din cauza dificultatilor intampinate in dezvoltarea motorului cu reactie. Al 2-lea prototip a folosit motor Jumo 004B-1.
In 1944, versiunea a 2-a a avionului a zburat pentru prima oara atingand viteza de 780km/h. Productia avionului a fost transferata catre Gothaer Waggonfabrik si numele a fost schimbat in Go229. Primul avion din Gothaer Waggonfabrik, Go 229 A-O V3, a primit un motor Jumo 004-C engine.
